Oi Futuro Flamengo | Rio de Janeiro, 17 May 2016

Other Registers was first staged in the Theatre at the Oi Futuro Flamengo cultural centre in Rio de Janeiro, as part of the showcase of Creative Lab projects in May 2016.

A circle was formed with eight speakers that played the sounds generated by the sonification software. Hanging above the centre of the speaker circle, there was a scenographic piece representing the top part of the caveirão armoured vehicle used by the police in Rio de Janeiro, which was one of the sources of inspiration for the installation because its construction includes loudspeakers which often play loud music during operations. The emptiness under the caveirão represented a future where the armoured car no longer exists, even when the effects of its presence still echo in people’s existence and memory.

The lighting design for Other Registers was done by Alessandro Boschini and reflects the colours of the logo of Rio’s elite BOPE police unit (Special Police Operations Batallion): white spotlights pointed at the black speakers, complementing their yellow cones, and a red strobelight on top of the black caveirão sculpture that was only indirectly visible to the public.

The staging was followed by a debate with public security specialist Silvia Ramos, activist and moviemaker Wagner Novais, and artist/curator Leonardo Bertolossi.

The staging occurred on May 17th 2016.

Other Registers was developed by Nico Espinoza, Rafucko, Samuel Van Ransbeeck and Tori Holmes (learn more about the artists) as part of Creative Lab, curated by Batman Zavareze and Paul Heritage and produced by Festival Multiplicidade and People’s Palace Projects (Queen Mary University of London) in partnership with CreativeWorks London. The project was made possible with research funding from the UK Arts & Humanities Research Council and the Newton Fund. The final project exhibition was hosted by Oi Futuro and Redes da Maré in association with Agência de Redes para Juventude, Olabi, Unirio, UFRJ and CasaRio.
